Turkey
Turkey is often mentioned in historical contexts as the gateway to Europe and the Middle East. The country is surrounded by four seas (the Aegean, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Marmara) from three sides. The official language is Turkish. The official currency is the Turkish lira, but almost everywhere dollars, euros, and in some places even hryvnias are accepted. However, we still recommend exchanging money for the local currency if you plan to make any purchases. It’s better to exchange currency at official points or banks to avoid fraud.
Seasonality of Recreation:
The optimal time for vacation starts from May and lasts until October. June is ideal for people who do not tolerate heat and for hypertensive individuals. In July and August, the daytime temperature can rise up to +44 degrees Celsius. The water temperature is around +26 degrees Celsius.
Visa Regime:
A visa-free regime is in effect, allowing stays of up to 90 days within six months. Required documents: passport (valid for at least 5 months from the date of entry into the country); airline ticket; voucher; insurance policy.
Etiquette and Country Specifics:
While in Turkey, it is not necessary to gesture excessively during conversations. You may not know the meanings of certain gestures in different regions. When visiting mosques, clothing should cover the body as much as possible, especially for women. Photographing Turks without their consent is not allowed. This is not just a whim but a regulated law by Islam.
National Cuisine:
Kebabs are very popular in Turkey – pieces of meat grilled over an open flame. Pork is not consumed in Turkey. “Pilaf” is the national dish of Turkey, prepared not only with meat but also with fish and various vegetables. The famous lokum (Turkish delight) and baklava are usually enjoyed with tea or yogurt. As for alcohol, the local drink is raki, an anise-flavored spirit.
Interesting Places to Visit:
Istanbul is the gem of Turkey. Go shopping at the famous Grand Bazaar. Of course, this city is rich in historical treasures, ancient streets, and the Bosphorus strait. We recommend visiting Pamukkale – a tour of the complex of mineral springs. Cappadocia is famous for its cave dwellings and valleys, and you can take a hot air balloon ride early in the morning.
What to Bring:
A hookah and tobacco can be a great gift for friends. Bring pomegranate or apple fruit tea from Turkey, along with Turkish sweets like lokum and baklava. It’s better to buy them by weight. A Turkish coffee pot (cezve) can be a wonderful souvenir from this country. Regarding leather goods, if possible, purchase them. The leather is soft, and the products are of good quality. But don’t forget to bargain! Typically, you can negotiate the price down to 70-80% of the listed price! For enthusiasts of stronger drinks, buy the local anise-flavored spirit – Raki.
